2025 Mid Year Report

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 8, 2025

Hopefully you have received and enjoyed a few of our recent athlete reports. It is early in the quad but significantly our athletes have already achieved podiums on the international stage. We could not be happier with both the results as well as the coaches and athletes’ work that is producing those results.

Project Podium

The program is progressing strongly, with all systems operating effectively and continuous efforts in place to optimize our processes. While results so far are encouraging, our primary focus remains on long-term skill development and raising performance standards of the athletes we are supporting. We are committed to their evolution from 'medal potential' to 'medal contenders' by 2028 — aiming not just to participate, but to stand at the top of the podium.

Q2 Performance Highlights:

  • Skiff Squad-Medals in Hyeres (49er GOLD and FX SILVER) and 49er European Championship- SILVER MEDAL

  • ILCA 6- Charlotte's strong performance in; North American Championship 1st, Hyeres Olympic Week 4th and ILCA 6 Worlds in China 8th (light air-shortened event).

  • IQ Foil-Men's Squad posting daily strong performances and able to win races against the best. World Championship July 4-11 in Aarhus, DEN

  • Formula Kite-Noah Runciman continues to raise his performance rising to race with the top international Formula Kite racers.

  • Strong performances have helped secure great international training partners in all classes.

    Sport Science

Project Podium is committed to excellence in all facets of competition. One of the most impactful ways we’re doing that is through the integration of the most advanced sport science available. We just completed our first Sports Science session July 2-5 in Long Beach.

Through cutting-edge physiological testing, personalized performance data, injury prevention strategies, recovery protocols, and cognitive and mental training, sport science is becoming the foundation of how we train smarter, to recover faster, and to compete harder. We’re not just preparing athletes—we’re redefining what’s possible in U.S. Olympic sailing.

The A1R Sports Science Team is supported by our partner, Quantum Racing:

  • Ryan West - Role: Ryan is an exercise scientist, and he specializes in integrating sports science, environment-specific training, and technology to optimize athlete development. Ryan has led multidisciplinary Athletic Performance Departments in elite sports, including three America’s Cup campaigns. Ryan has developedinnovative tools and technology for athlete monitoring and performance.

  • Baden Cashmore - Role: Physiotherapist / Athletic Performance. Baden has served as Head of Physiotherapy for two America’s Cup campaigns, where he was responsible for injury prevention, rehabilitation, and optimizing athlete performance. Most recently, Baden led the Athletic Performance Department for American Magic in the 37th America’s Cup.

  • Megan Foley. Role: Fuelin Nutritionist. She will join us for a couple days to work with the Project Podium team. Megan Foley is part of the Fuelin Coaching Team and is a Registered Dietitian to endurance athletes at all levels, including professionals, Olympians, focusing on enhancing athletes' nutrition and performance.

Key Challenges and Strategic Focus

Time is always our athletes most precious resource, making discipline, focus and mitigation of distractions, essential. Our team is doing an excellent job on all fronts.
Our Project Podium athletes are on track to qualify to represent the United States at the Pan American and Olympic Games through Team USA, and there is no strategic or performance-driven rationale to align with the U.S. Sailing Team structure. Our athletes have a “nose to the grindstone” mentality and enjoy the distraction free environment A1Ris able to provide. That said, Leandro and Charlie have established a professional and respectful line of communication with the new US Sailing CEO, Charlie Enright.

On June 30, San Pedro, California, was confirmed as the venue for 6 of the 10 events of the 2028 Sailing Olympics. San Pedro is in the county of Los Angeles where Long Beach is in Orange County. Only the Formula Kite and iQ Foil competitions will be held off the beach near Belmont Shore/Long Beach, presumably due to the beach requirements for launching these classes. The A1R performance team has been preparing for this possible outcome and is now executing.

Foiling Pipeline update

This initiative is gaining momentum with an increased number of domestic training camps and broader athlete identification and support. We are collaborating effectively with classes, clubs, and development groups to grow the number of the entry level athletes, while keeping our core focus on elite coaching and high-performance development.

A1R Partner Quantum Racing continues to provide access to some of the best foiling coaches in the world, reinforcing our commitment to technical excellence. We are in the midst of a busy summer of camps and regattas including travel teams to the Wingfoil World Cup (see below), WASZP Games in England, and Moth Worlds in Italy.

A1R will host the third Annual A1R Foiling Camp in Pensacola, FL on October 5-8 which lookstobethebiggesttodateinnumbersandtalent. Weareworkingcloselywithpartner American Magic leaders to align efforts among our Programs.

Foiling Pipeline Results

Wingfoil World Cup debut

America One Racing Wingfoil Travel Team made a strong and promising debut on the international Wingfoil stage at the recent World Cup in Silvaplana, Switzerland. The squad demonstrated impressive technical skill, adaptability, and cohesion—hallmarks of A1R squad mentality. Standout results included Sean Herbert’s bronze medal and JP Lattanzi’s5th place overall, demonstrating the depth and competitiveness of our emerging Wingfoil squad. This milestone was the result of focused domestic preparation and a structured development pipeline.

Wingfoil US National Championship and U.S. Singlehanded Championship

A1R athletes won three national titles at the US Sailing Singlehanded (O’day) and Wingfoil National Championships demonstrating the value of A1R’s long-term development pathway.
Gavin Ball claimed the U.S. Singlehanded Championship title hosted at the Tabor Academy in Marion, MA raced in the WASZP class, confirming his place as one of the most promising young sailing athletes in the U.S. JP Lattanzi secured the overall U.S. Wingfoil Championship in San Francisco hosted by St. Francis Yacht Club, just weeks after his impressive 5th place finish at the Wingfoil World Cup. At the same event, Calum McDonald captured the U19 U.S. Wingfoil title, rounding out a triple gold performance for A1R.

A1R Operational Efficiency and Financial Discipline

Despite our very lean team, we deliver a high level of support to athletes by leveraging a collaborative model where coaches are also actively involved in operational execution. This integrated approach allows us to align performance delivery with cost control, maintaining high attention to detail while managing our expenses efficiently. A1R and the Sailing Foundation of New York have built an effective, yet simple and auditable cost reimbursement system for athlete campaign expenses. We believe Project Podium athletes appreciate the opportunity to compete as funded professional athletes as do their competitors from other successful sailing nations

Looking Ahead

With the second half of 2025 upon us, we remain focused on execution. From sport science to talent identification, domestic training camps and travel teams, training efficiently, every initiative supports our long-term mission: to deliver American athletes to the top of the podium in their classes.

Thanks to your support and passion for success in the USA, A1R and its partners are providing much needed coaching, leadership and guidance to the future of sailing in the USA. We are very proud of the A1R Team and their progress to date!
