A1R’s Second Women’s High Performance SWITCH Camp Builds Technical Skills and Foiling Expertise
A1R recently hosted its second Women’s High Performance SWITCH Camp in Long Beach, California, bringing together female athletes from Olympic, foiling and professional racing backgrounds to accelerate learning in one of sailing’s most exciting emerging classes.
Led by JP Lattanzi and supported by both A1R Head Coach Charlie McKee and foiling Waszp World Champion Gavin Ball, the camp challenged athletes through a blend of on- and off-the-water training designed to accelerate technical development and deepen understanding of the SWITCH platform. Athletes including Carina Becker, Lindsay Gimple and Maya Kwasniewski joined a growing group of sailors exploring how skills developed across classes translate to the unique demands of foiling dinghy sailing.
Based out of Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, sailors took advantage of Long Beach’s reliable afternoon seabreeze to log hours on the water while refining boat handling, foil initiation, maneuvers and racecourse decision-making. Daily technical briefings, drone footage and video debriefs provided immediate feedback to the athletes.
Throughout the week, athletes experimented with mast, sail, and foil setup to better explore the relationship between tuning, speed and stability. Just as valuable was the exchange of ideas among sailors from different disciplines, creating an environment where knowledge was shared openly and progress accelerated collectively.
The camp embodied a core principle of A1R’s high-performance model: improvement happens fastest when talented athletes are challenged by both the platform and each other. Through testing, analysis and repetition, sailors developed not only greater confidence in the SWITCH, but also a deeper understanding of the technical and tactical skills required to excel in modern foiling classes.
As the SWITCH program continues to evolve, A1R remains committed to providing athletes with access to world-class coaching, performance analysis and emerging technologies that support long-term development and help shape the future of high-performance sailing.
