System to Success: Snow & McDiarmid Claim Gold One Week After Setback
A1R’s 49er team of Nevin Snow and Ian McDiarmid, working closely with coach Klaus Lange, recently completed a very successful seventeen day training block in New Zealand. Competing against top international teams—including Australia and New Zealand, two nations who have produced by far the most skiff medalists; the level of racing was uncompromising.
After missing the podium in the first event the team initiated a rigorous review process. Through debrief sessions, video analysis, performance metrics, and equipment refinement, some opportunities were identified in starting execution, decision-making, technique, and communication. With two regattas nearly back-to-back implementation was able to be made almost immediately.
The result: The pair won the NZ 49er National Championships the following week at the same venue.
“The biggest difference wasn’t speed—it was clarity,” said Ian McDiarmid. “We came out of the first event knowing exactly where we left points on the table. With Klaus and the full support team, we turned that into specific actions. By the second week, we were racing with conviction and composure.”
For High Performance Director Charlie McKee, the turnaround echoes the broader evolution of the program:
“When athletes, coaches, and performance experts align around objective feedback and implement change quickly, good things can happen. Nevin and Ian are very experienced, and they have such a strong desire to keep learning and a very good understanding of how to use the support around them to help. This was a great result against top competition, and it’s inspirational for our whole team.”
This type of progression underscores the basis of our performance framework:
Integrated athlete–coach–expert collaboration
Real-time access to analytics and technical support
Objective, solutions-focused review processes
Accountability and growth mindset
Efficient execution of targeted improvements
We continue forward with discipline, clarity, and belief in our collective trajectory.
