Momentum Builds in Kiel as Project Podium Skiff Sailors Look Ahead TO EUROPEANS
Some regattas are measured by medals; others by momentum. For A1R’s Project Podium skiff athletes, Kiel Week delivered both. One of the premier stops on the Olympic sailing circuit, Kiel Week brought together deep international fleets and classic Baltic conditions. Light, shifting winds demanded patience and precision, while crowded starts and constant tactical decisions meant every position on the racecourse had to be earned. In fleets this competitive, consistency often matters more than spectacular race wins.
49er team Nevin Snow and Ian MacDiarmid once again proved they belong among the world’s best, earning a podium finish in one of the deepest fleets of the season. They stayed in the hunt all week, making smart decisions, minimizing mistakes and putting themselves in position when it mattered most. And their third-place finish is another sign that the team continues to build confidence and momentum as the Olympic cycle progresses.
For 49erFX team Paris Henken and Helena Scutt, Kiel Week marked something different…but just as important. After resetting with a renewed focus on making incremental gains, the week became another opportunity to put that process into practice. Racing against one of the deepest 49erFX fleets in the world, the pair showed flashes of the speed they know they’re capable of while continuing to refine communication, boat handling and other tactical elements.
Not every breakthrough is reflected on the scoreboard. Some come from identifying where the next gains will be found, leaving a regatta with greater clarity than when you arrived, and trusting that those small improvements will compound over time. That’s exactly where Henken and Scutt find themselves as they continue building toward their long-term goals. Now the team’s attention turns to the European and OCR regattas, where opportunities await. Snow and MacDiarmid will look to build on a podium performance, while Henken and Scutt continue the steady climb that every successful Olympic campaign demands. The destination remains the same. Kiel was another important step along the way.
Next skiff stop: July’s Europeans in Eckernforde, Germany.
